On Biden's first day in office, his Administration and Extreme Democrats launched an unprecedented war on American energy. This war included killing the Keystone XL pipeline, a pause on all pending approvals of liquified natural gas (LNG) export terminals, and a ban on gas-powered vehicles. In a desperate attempt to mitigate the pain caused by his failed Far Left anti-American energy agenda, Biden depleted our Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) to its lowest level since the 1980s, jeopardizing our national security. The results of Biden's war on American energy have been catastrophic, and Americans have had enough.
That is why today, House Republicans are bringing to the floor H.Res. 987, denouncing the harmful, anti-American energy policies of the Biden Administration. This bill was introduced by Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-WA), and it condemns Joe Biden's failed Far Left anti-American energy agenda for jeopardizing our national security, causing the cost of living to skyrocket, and forcing America to be dependent on foreign adversaries for energy.
FACTS ABOUT H.RES. 987 (Courtesy of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce): Unaffordable Energy Bills:
The Biden administration has proposed and finalized regulations that increase the cost of energy for American families, hamper domestic production of energy, and increase reliance on foreign adversaries, like China, for our energy needs.
In May 2023, it was calculated that nearly 20 million households in the United States were behind on their utility bills because of rising energy prices.
In his first 26 months in office, energy prices under President Biden increased roughly 37.2 percent—the largest increase of any of the previous seven administrations.
Radical Rush-to-Green Agenda:
President Biden canceled the Keystone XL pipeline on his first day in office. With a stroke of a pen, he eliminated 11,000 potential jobs, prevented hundreds of thousands of barrels of oil per day from America’s supply, and cost communities millions of dollars in revenue.
President Biden has blocked domestic mineral development in the United States, despite forcing a rush-to-green agenda that requires critical minerals, choosing instead to make the U.S. dependent on foreign countries who use child labor and have inhumane working conditions, such as the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
On January 26, 2024, the Biden administration announced guidance that would ban LNG exports under section 3 of the Natural Gas Act (15 U.S.C. 717b), causing turmoil to America’s energy security, our economy, and the energy security of our allies.
Destroying American Energy Dominance and Security:
The Biden administration has proposed numerous restrictions of energy development on federal land.
The Biden administration drained the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) to its lowest levels since in an election-year gimmick to try and lower high gas prices. Americans suffered record-high gas prices as the result of President Biden’s war on domestic energy production.
This administration’s actions to undercut American energy have forced the United States to depend on other countries to supply our energy needs. This is dangerous to both our energy security and our national security.
The United States became the global leader in liquified natural gas (LNG) exports for the first time in 2023. LNG exports are economic drivers to America’s energy industry, help local communities, and provide critical energy to our allies. Our European allies are desperate for American energy to counter Russia’s weaponization of natural gas exports.
BIDEN’S ENERGY CRISIS BY THE NUMBERS:
Today the average national price for a gallon of gas is $3.53, according to AAA, the highest level since October 2023.
On Monday, the average national gas price for a gallon for the "first time since late last year, prices at the pump are now higher on a year-over-year basis."
Yesterday, Joe Biden’s EPA announced new vehicle regulations that amount to a de facto gas vehicle ban, covering passenger cars and trucks, model years 2027-2032.
Last year, gas cars accounted for 92% of U.S. vehicle sales, while less than 8% were electric. More than a third of EV sales occurred in California.
75% of U.S. registered voters oppose government policies that would ban new gasoline, diesel and traditional hybrid vehicles, including 80% of Independent voters and 56% of Democrats.
Compliance with the new regulations will require a more than 600% increase in EV sales over a period of 8 years.
In January 2024, the Biden Administration announced they paused all pending non-FTA export permit applications for liquified natural gas (LNG) export projects, empowering countries like Russia and Iran while hurting our allies who depend on U.S. energy.
The Biden Administration is kowtowing to environmentalists by having his Department of Energy undertake a review of LNG export terminals and the climate considerations for their approval.
By cutting off exports from the United States, Biden is pushing our allies, including the European Union and other countries, to dirtier sources.
Since 2012, the Energy Department commissioned three studies on the impact of gas exports focusing on the economics of the trade. Those previous reviews had consistently found gas exports benefited the public.
The Biden Administration has continually passed the buck by blaming domestic energy producers:
Biden’s regulatory assault destroys ANY incentive for domestic energy producers to invest, and it worsens energy market volatility.
Most recently, Biden announced that his Administration would no longer hold court-ordered offshore oil and gas lease sales in the Gulf of Mexico and Alaska.
On day one of Joe Biden’s presidency, he launched his war on American energy when he killed the Keystone XL pipeline, which could be supplying 830,000 thousand barrels of oil from Canada to U.S. refineries.
In March 2020, President Trump directed the Department of Energy to purchase 30 million barrels to begin filling the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR).
Biden is responsible for the largest-ever loan from our SPR of 180 million barrels of oil over six months.
Joe Biden sold nearly 40 percent of our stockpile since being elected—more than EVERY U.S. President in history COMBINED.
The SPR is meant for weather or national security emergencies not political expediency.
Biden has depleted our Strategic Petroleum Reserve by over 40%, bringing it to its lowest levels since the early 1980s.
Since Biden took office, his Administration and Congressional Democrats have taken over 200 actions deliberately designed to make it harder to produce energy here in America.
